Final - OT
Nyquist, Red Wings edge Senators in OT
Dec 28, 2014 - 4:03 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Gustav Nyquist finished off a dominant shift with the game-winning goal late in overtime to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.Nyquist cycled around the offensive with excellent puck protection for 28 seconds and beat Craig Anderson with a wrist shot from the left circle with 48 seconds remaining in the extra session to give Detroit the win.
"The guys did a good job of creating some space for me," Nyquist said. "It was nice to see it go in at the end."
Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist, Justin Abdelkader also scored and Niklas Kronwall supplied two helpers for the Red Wings, who have won two straight on the heels of a six-game losing streak.
Jimmy Howard turned aside 31 shots in his return from a groin injury.
Mike Hoffman and Clarke MacArthur each scored for the Senators, who have lost three in a row.
"I didn't think we were awful in the third by any means," Ottawa coach Dave Cameron said. "We stopped shooting the puck and got a little cute."
Anderson made 24 stops in defeat.
Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser intercepted an errant pass in front of the net, but immediately turned it over to MacArthur, who fired a shot through the legs of Howard for a 2-1 Senators lead with 6:44 left in the second period.
Seconds after Mark Borowiecki went to the box for interference, Zetterberg took a cross-ice pass from Kronwall off a faceoff win, and had his one-timer deflected off Ottawa's Erik Condra and into the net for a tie game 3:58 into the third.
Darren Helm stripped Erik Karlsson of the puck moments later and embarked down the ice on a short-handed breakaway. Anderson, however, made a pad stop on Helm's backhander to keep it tied.
Early in overtime, Karlsson charged through the neutral zone and broke into the Detroit zone alone, but Howard got enough of Karlsson's shot to keep game going.
The Senators struck first as Hoffman backhanded the rebound of a Borowiecki point shot past Howard with 6:19 remaining in the opening stanza.
Zetterberg's shot along the left side went off Anderson's pad and ricocheted off the end boards to Abdelkader, who beat the Ottawa netminder with a nifty backhander for a tied game with 13 seconds remaining in the first.
