Devils nip Senators on Cammalleri's goal

Feb 4, 2015 - 4:57 AM Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Cammalleri scored in the third period as the New Jersey Devils hung on for a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators at Prudential Center.

Ottawa forward Bobby Ryan, a native of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, had an open net in the dying seconds but couldn't get a shot off.

"I was just trying to flop and get something down. He's probably the last guy you want standing there with an open net," said Cory Schneider, who stopped 19-of-20 shots in his career-best 44th start.

Adam Henrique had the other goal for the Devils, who have earned a point in a season-high five straight games (4-0-1).

Curtis Lazar scored and Robin Lehner made 17 saves for Ottawa, which has dropped four of its last six games.

"I thought the guys played hard. I just don't think we executed in some situations well enough," Ryan said.

Cammalleri broke a 1-1 tie with his team-leading 17th goal of the season after some nice work along the boards by Jaromir Jagr. He took a pass from Jagr and snapped a shot from the slot past Lehner on the blocker side at 5:02 of the third.

Miscommunication between Cammalleri and Andy Greene led to a breakaway goal by Lazar at 10:33 of the second period. Although he lost the puck, Lazar regained control and slipped it past Schneider.

Henrique responded for New Jersey 1:35 later, beating Lehner to the far side with a shot from the bottom of the left circle off a feed from Marek Zidlicky.
