Iginla lifts Avs over Devils in SO

Mar 13, 2015 - 6:09 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarome Iginla provided his club's lone goal in regulation and added a shootout winner as Colorado trimmed New Jersey, 2-1, at Pepsi Center.

Semyon Varlamov made 23 saves in the game's first 65 minutes then added two more stops in the breakaway round for the Avalanche, winners in four of their last five games.

Andy Greene tallied for the Devils, who have dropped five of their last eight. Cory Schneider lost despite turning away 28 shots.

Iginla opened the scoring for the hosts at 2:27 of the second period, following up Matt Duchene's miss and scoring from the high slot.

"There's lot of games left," Iginla said. "I know it goes quickly, but there's lots of points to be had, so we're just going to keep trying on focusing on ourselves and keep trying to find ways to win games and keep chipping away."

Greene evened the score at 14:12 by overpowering Varlamov on a screened blast from the left point.

Schneider closed off the five-hole and denied Alex Tanguay's original breakaway chance as well as the rebound midway through the extra session.

Varlamov was quick with the glove to deny a blistering shot by Jon Merrill from the right wing a short time later.

"I think we liked a lot of things about our game tonight, but the first thing that comes to mind is I liked our compete and work ethic," Devils forward Mike Cammalleri said. "I thought there was a consistency through our lineup as far as our commitment, and that's key."
