Penguins fall to Flyers again

Apr 5, 2015 - 8:39 PM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Penguins will have to wait until the 2015-16 season if they hope to end their losing streak to the rival Philadelphia Flyers.

Steve Mason made 46 saves to lead Philadelphia to a 4-1 win on Sunday, and the Flyers scored four unanswered goals to win their eighth straight meeting in the Keystone State rivalry.

"It's great to say we need to score, but it's getting those opportunities and having quality chances," said Penguins coach Mike Johnston. "Tonight we did, and we just didn't finish."

Brayden Schenn scored a goal and added two assists, Jake Voracek finished with a goal and an assist, and Ryan White and Michael Del Zotto also scored for the Flyers, who have been eliminated from postseason contention despite recording at least a point in six straight games.

The Penguins lost their third straight game and with 95 points they sit in the first wild card in the Eastern Conference. The Bruins also have 95 points, but Pittsburgh holds the tiebreaker and each team has three games to play.

"They have something to play for, and we were happy to take it away from them," said Mason.

Brandon Sutter scored Pittsburgh's only goal, and Thomas Greiss allowed four goals on 20 shots.

Pittsburgh dominated play in the first period and outshot the Flyers, 22-4. A late cross-checking penalty by Daniel Winnik, though, gave the hosts life. With 42 seconds to play in the period, Voracek tied the game when he hammered a one-timer past Greiss from the top of the circle.

Less than 20 seconds into its second power play of the game, Philadelphia went up for good. Voracek's pass to Schenn deflected high in the air off Schenn's stick. White allowed the puck to bounce into the net instead of batting it with his stick, which would have stopped play and negated any goal.

White added an insurance goal himself with less than five minutes to play in the game. After passing the puck to Sean Couturier beneath the goal line, White circled back to the net and snapped the return pass into the back of the net to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead.

Philadelphia added a fourth goal for good measure in the closing seconds when Del Zotto redirected Schenn's feed past Greiss for his 10th goal of the season, tying a career high.

Sutter scored the first goal of the game on the power play late in the first period. He took a pass at the goal line, spun around and whipped a shot past Mason to give the Penguins a lead that proved to be brief.

Philadelphia had not swept the season series against Pittsburgh since 1983-84 ... Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin returned from a two-game absence with an undisclosed injury ... Malkin and Sidney Crosby combined for just one goal and two assists against the Flyers this season ... Voracek moved to within two points of Crosby for the league's scoring lead ... Referee Paul Devorski retired after this game with his younger brother Greg on the ice as a linesman.
