Hammond, Sens top Islanders

Mar 14, 2015 - 5:02 AM Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Hammond made 34 saves to backstop the surging Ottawa Senators to a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders on Friday.

Kyle Turris and Matt Puempel had second-period goals for Ottawa, which improved to 12-2-2 in its last 16 games and moved to within five points of Boston for the Eastern Conference's final wild-card spot.

Jaroslav Halak stopped 26 shots for the Islanders, who have dropped five of seven and remain one point back of the Rangers for first in the Metropolitan Division.

"I thought (our play) was better than the last game. We just got to put (the puck) in the net," said Islanders captain John Tavares.

Tyler Kennedy beat Hammond on a deflection with 8:01 remaining, but the Islanders were unable to produce an equalizer with Halak on the bench.

Puempel hammered a loose puck in the slot past a Bobby Ryan screen and behind Halak at 6:32 of the second. The Senators went up 2-0 when an Erik Karlsson wrister from the right point was tipped in front by Turris with 1:07 left.

The Islanders registered nine shots while failing to convert on three straight power plays in the second. Hammond turned away 22 shots in the period.

"We got into a little bit of penalty trouble but the killers did a great job," Hammond said. "I really wanted to worry about making the first save."

Game Notes

Hammond has allowed two or fewer goals in each of his first 10 career NHL starts ... The Islanders suffered their third straight home loss.
