Weise fuels Canadiens to OT win over Senators in Game 3
Apr 20, 2015 - 2:51 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Dale Weise scored his second goal of the night 8:47 into overtime to help the Montreal Canadiens take a stranglehold of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal playoff series against the Ottawa Senators.Weise, who tied the game with under six minutes left in the third period to force overtime, skated to the left circle and wristed a shot past Craig Anderson short side for a 2-1 win and a 3-0 series lead on Sunday.
Anderson, playing in his first game since March 29, was called upon after Ottawa dropped the first two games of the series in Montreal with Andrew Hammond between the pipes. Anderson nearly secured his third career postseason shutout, but instead finished with 47 saves in a disappointing loss.
Carey Price made 33 stops for his 20th career postseason victory.
Clarke MacArthur scored the lone goal for the Senators, who will look to salvage the series in Game 4 at home on Wednesday.
"We played with much confidence and it helps to have a guy like Carey Price in net who is solid," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said. "Every game we have two teams fighting very hard and we gotta give credit to the Senators. They have been hard on us in the first period."
Ottawa took a lead into the first intermission for the third straight game in the series. Erik Karlsson brought the puck into the Montreal zone and dropped it off to Mark Stone, who whipped a backhand pass to MacArthur at the side of the net. MacArthur played with the puck to the right of Price -- with Kyle Turris fighting off a Canadiens defender in front -- before backhanding it in at 11:28 to the delight of the home crowd.
Anderson was up the task midway through the second period when Max Pacioretty skated in on a 2-on-1 break and fired a shot on net that was turned aside.
The Senators killed off their second power play of the period moments later, then Milan Michalek had trouble controlling the puck as he skated in alone on Price off a cross-ice feed from Bobby Ryan.
The two teams went 4-on-4 on two different occasions in the third, but neither could take advantage of the open ice.
The Canadiens kept up pressure in the Ottawa zone late in the period and Weise provided the equalizer, knocking the puck down and snapping a shot into an unoccupied net following Brandon Prust's attempt from a tight angle.
The Senators killed off their fifth penalty of regulation after Mark Borowiecki went to the box for delay of game with 3:42 remaining in the third.
"They did a good job and they made it hard on us. We couldn't put the puck in the net," Karlsson said. "We didn't really create enough scoring chances."
Stone ripped a slapshot right into the glove of Price early in the overtime period as the game remained tied. Curtis Lazar received two minutes for boarding and Anderson had to fend off a couple of Montreal scoring chances during the penalty kill. He made a blocker save just before gloving a slapshot from the point. Weise scored 33 seconds after the power play expired.
