Moore scores in OT as Devils beat Canadiens 3-2
Nov 29, 2015 - 5:06 AM MONTREAL (AP) One day after Montreal rallied for a win in New Jersey, John Moore and the Devils returned the favor against the Canadiens.Moore scored in overtime, and New Jersey beat NHL-leading Montreal 3-2 on Saturday night.
''We stuck to a game plan that we thought was going to work,'' Devils forward Mike Cammalleri said. ''It took longer than you hope for but we got the two points we really needed.''
Patrik Elias and Kyle Palmieri scored in regulation for New Jersey (12-9-2). In his first career game at the Bell Centre, Cory Schneider stopped 30 shots.
Alex Galchenyuk scored twice for Montreal (18-4-3). Mike Condon made 28 saves while subbing for injured starter Carey Price.
''It's definitely disappointing,'' Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said. ''When you're leading 2-0, you owe it to yourself to finish the job you started. And we weren't able to do that tonight.
''Details made all the difference on the two last goals tonight.''
New Jersey bounced back nicely from Friday's 3-2 loss to Montreal, when the Canadiens rallied from two goals down to beat the Devils in a shootout in the first game of their home-and-home series. Condon and Schneider started both games.
Leading 2-1 in the final minute of regulation, Montreal iced the puck while shooting for New Jersey's empty net. The Devils won the ensuing faceoff, and Palmieri scored his eighth of the season with 22 seconds left.
''I tried to come out of the crease to take away the shot,'' Condon said. ''I tried to track the shot but didn't do it very well. That's a save I have to make for my team. Put that one on me.''
In overtime, Moore, who assisted on Palmieri's goal, cashed in his own rebound at 2:31 to give New Jersey the victory.
Elias got the comeback started for New Jersey when he deflected Adam Larsson's shot from the point between Condon's legs at 11:01 of the third.
It was just the third loss this season for Montreal when leading after two periods (11-1-2).
After a scoreless first period, Galchenyuk put Montreal in front at 9:06 of the second with his fourth goal in as many games. The second-line center deflected a Nathan Beaulieu shot past Schneider, who never saw the puck.
Galchenyuk's four-game goal streak is the longest of his career.
''I've worked hard in practice and worked hard in games to get my offensive game going,'' he said. ''I'm happy I'm able to chip in offensively.''
David Desharnais almost doubled the lead minutes later on a breakaway, but Schneider made a nice pad save. Schneider also denied Christian Thomas from point blank range in the third.
Galchenyuk scored his second of the game at 8:50 of the third. Nine seconds into an interference penalty for Elias, the 21-year-old Galchenyuk jumped on a loose puck in the crease after Schneider stopped Max Pacioretty's initial shot.
NOTES: Price, Brendan Gallagher, Alexander Semin and Torrey Mitchell were not in Montreal'S lineup due to injuries. ... Montreal D Alexei Emelin was a healthy scratch. Greg Pateryn started in his place. ... Thomas, recalled from the AHL's St. John's IceCaps on Thursday, made his season debut.
