Barkov gets winner in shootout, Panthers beat Jackets 2-1

Dec 5, 2015 - 4:25 AM COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) The Florida Panthers are tired, but hungry. Facing a rested Columbus team, they plugged away until they got another two points.

Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov scored in a shootout and the Panthers beat the Blue Jackets 2-1 on Friday night to extend their winning streak to five games.

The Panthers have also won five straight road games to tie the franchise mark set in 2007, including the first four of this five-game trip.

Even though Florida won 2-1 a night earlier in Nashville and the Blue Jackets last played on Tuesday, the Panthers held an 8-0 shots advantage 7 minutes in.

''I thought we played a great first period and that set the tone for us,'' Florida coach Gerard Gallant said.

Al Montoya was superb in his first start in a month, finishing with 22 saves.

''I was like, `All right, the boys are here to play, let me just make the saves I can and contribute in any way I can,''' Montoya said. ''They got the ball rolling. It was a pesky road game. ''

Vincent Trocheck scored for Florida 1:16 into the second period.

Michael Chaput scored midway through the second and Sergei Bobrovksy had 31 saves for Columbus. The Blue Jackets have dropped three straight, all of which were tied 1-1 in the third period.

''To me it was a little bit of lack of respect for the opponent,'' Columbus coach John Tortorella. ''And I don't understand how we can disrespect an opponent when we're looking up at all 29 teams. It's another lesson that we're going to have to learn.''

Cam Atkinson had Columbus' lone shootout goal.

Columbus survived being short-handed in overtime and then almost had a great scoring chance, but a 2-on-1 break was whistled offside with 28.7 seconds left.

With just over 6 minutes left in the third, the puck deflected off Columbus center Ryan Johansen's skate and then off the post. The Blue Jackets' slumping power play didn't threaten during two opportunities it had later in the period. The Panthers grinded away two solid kills.

''To kill those two penalties back to back late in the game like that were huge for us,'' Gallant said.

Each team entered averaging two-or-fewer goals per game over its previous five contests, and this one was a sleepy contest early.

Trocheck injected a bit of life into the game with his goal. His cross-crease pass caromed off defenseman Justin Falk's right knee and behind Bobrovsky.

''Those are the kind of goals that are going to go in if you are playing hard,'' said Trocheck, tied with Jaromir Jagr for the team lead with eight goals.

Chaput, recently recalled from the minors, tied it for Columbus later in the period. He controlled a long pass with Trocheck on his back and steered the puck past Montoya.

With 9.4 seconds remaining in the period, Bobrovksy went down after absorbing Erik Gudbranson's hard shot in his facemask. He was attended to by a team trainer for several minutes but stayed in the game.

NOTES: Florida won in Columbus for the first time since 2007 and has a two-game winning streak against the Blue Jackets after suffering 10 straight losses. ... The Blue Jackets couldn't convert on four power plays and are 0 for 23 in their last nine games. ... Panthers D Dmitry Kulikov returned to the lineup for Florida after missing the last eight games with a knee injury. ... LW Scott Hartnell - tied for second on Columbus with nine goals - was a healthy scratch. ... The next goal for the 44-year-old Jagr will tie him with Marcel Dionne for fourth all-time with 731.
