Former Kings coach Murray to guide Flyers' AHL team

Jun 29, 2012 - 8:37 PM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers named Terry Murray head coach of the Adirondack Phantoms, their American Hockey League affiliate, on Friday.

The 61-year-old Murray, who was the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings at the start of the 2011-12 season, was fired in December.

Murray coached the Flyers from 1994-97, leading them to the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals, and served as a Flyers' assistant from 2003-2008.

"I really appreciate the opportunity to come back to the Flyers organization and I'm really looking forward to the challenge that's out there of coaching the Phantoms," Murray said. "The youth playing down in the American Hockey League is a real important part of the organization. I'm looking forward to the challenge of getting back into the playoffs and helping these young players develop and become NHL players as quickly as possible."

Murray was also head coach of the Washington Capitals (1989-94) and the Florida Panthers (1998-2001).

The Flyers also named Ian Laperriere the director of player development. Laperriere, 38, recently announced his retirement following a career that spanned 16 seasons. He was forced to sit out the last two years due to concussion-related symptoms.
