Final
Sens blank Leafs
Apr 13, 2014 - 5:19 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Craig Anderson stopped 28 shots for his fourth shutout of the season, helping the Ottawa Senators to a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The loss finished off a disappointing end to the season for Toronto, as the team went 2-12-0 over its final 14 games to finish with a mark of 38-36-8, missing the playoffs for the eighth time in the past nine campaigns. Toronto had been in second place in the Atlantic Division on March 13 prior to the collapse.
"It's terribly disappointing and emotional," said Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle. "It's almost like you get in a state of depression because it's such a negative in your life. We're embarrassed about the way things unraveled for our hockey club."
Toronto has already made a big change, naming Brendan Shanahan as the new team president on Friday. The Hall of Famer had been serving as the director of player safety since June 1, 2011.
James Reimer turned aside 36-of-37 shots in the loss.
Jason Spezza had the only goal of the game for the Senators, who are riding a season-high five-game winning streak and close off their campaign in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
"We're playing games that don't mean much in the standings as far as getting us into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, which is what it's all about," said Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean. "But at the same time, finishing our home schedule like we are is way better."
The only goal of this game came at 7:35 of the second period on the power play, as Spezza blasted a one-timer from the left circle in off the right post for his 23rd goal of the season.
Anderson made 19 saves through the first two period, then polished off the shutout in the final period with nine stops, helping the Senators kill off two penalties, including 23 seconds of a 5-on-3.
Game Notes
Anderson has 26 shutouts in his career ... Toronto was 14-20-7 on the road this season ... The Senators went 18-17-6 in front of the home crowd ... The Maple Leafs had won the previous three games against the Senators this season, and six straight overall.
