Flyers G Emery to start Game 2

Apr 19, 2014 - 6:22 PM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Flyers announced Saturday that goaltender Ray Emery will start Game 2 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series against the New York Rangers on Sunday.

With starting netminder Steve Mason recovering from an upper-body injury, Emery got the nod in Game 1 and turned away 22-of-23 shots in the first two periods, but gave up three goals on 13 shots in the third as the Rangers claimed a 4-1 victory to draw first blood in the series.

Mason was hurt in Philadelphia's penultimate regular-season game when Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jayson Megna pushed Philadelphia defenseman Andrew MacDonald into the netminder in the crease.

After missing Thursday's game, Mason practiced on Friday and Saturday in New York, but was deemed unavailable for Sunday's Game 2.

As in Game 1, Cal Heeter, who has just one game of NHL experience, will back up Emery.
