Flyers bring in Schultz for defensive depth
Jul 2, 2014 - 11:18 PM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Flyers agreed to terms on a one-year contract with defenseman Nick Schultz on Wednesday. The 31-year-old native of Saskatchewan skated in 69 games between the Oilers and Blue Jackets last season, compiling five assists, 28 penalty minutes and a minus-13 rating.
A former second-round draft pick of Minnesota in 2000, Schultz is a veteran of 880 NHL contests for three clubs, and has tallied 27 goals, 119 assists and 384 penalty minutes.
In other moves, Philly inked forward Jason Akeson to a one-year, two-way deal, acquired a third-round draft pick in 2015 in exchange for minor-league forward Tye McGinn and signed winger Andrew Gordon to a one-year, two-way contract.
Akeson led the Adirondack Phantoms in the top scoring categories a year ago with 24 goals, 40 assists and 64 points over 70 appearances. He contributed one assist in his lone regular-season game with the Flyers, then posted two goals and one assist in seven playoff contests.
McGinn appeared in 36 games over the last two seasons for Philadelphia, totaling seven goals and 10 points. He added 35 points (20G, 15A) in 54 games with the Phantoms.
Gordon last appeared in the NHL during a six-game stint with the Canucks two seasons ago, where he failed to record a point. The 28-year-old former Capitals draft pick has seen 55 games for Washington, Anaheim and Vancouver in parts of five NHL seasons.
