Coyotes win on PP goal in OT; Cup-champion Kings still winless

Oct 12, 2014 - 6:26 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Oliver Ekman-Larsson's power-play goal zipped through a screen with 14 seconds remaining in overtime and delivered a 3-2 Arizona victory over defending-champion Los Angeles on Saturday.

Tyler Toffoli was sent off for hooking with 1:19 to play in the extra session, and the hosts cashed in when Ekman-Larsson's eighth shot on goal in the contest -- a drive from the right wing -- beat a screened Jonathan Quick.

Newly-christened Arizona had dropped a 6-2 decision to Winnipeg in Thursday's season opener. L.A. was coming off a 4-0 shutout loss at home on Wednesday.

Antoine Vermette, who assisted on the game winner also tallied, with Mikkel Boedker adding a score for the Coyotes. Devan Dubnyk stopped 24 of 26 shots for his first win of the season.

"We were much more poised with the puck tonight than we were the other night," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett. "Especially moving out of our zone and into the neutral zone, things were much better."

Tanner Pearson and Jeff Carter lit the lamp for the Kings, while Quick took the loss despite turning away 37 pucks.

"They took advantage of their opportunities in the first period and the second period they played strong," said Los Angeles head coach Darryl Sutter. "The third period I thought there was a lot more back and forth."

Pearson opened the scoring just 92 seconds in on a fluttering wrister from the right side, and LA went up by two with just over seven minutes left in the opening period on a shot from the right circle.

The Coyotes halved their deficit on Vermette's tip-in at 19:21 of the first, then tied the contest on Boedker's successful try on a clean break up the middle at 10:50 of the second.

Dubnyk made a stellar stop on a Toffoli rush with seconds left in regulation, flashing his right pad as the Kings forward cut in from the right wing through the slot.

Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle assisted on all three of his club's goals ... The Kings' line of Toffoli, Carter and Pearson ended the night with three points and combined plus-6 rating.
