Winless Oilers host Canucks

Oct 17, 2014 - 3:06 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The rested Vancouver Canucks try to begin the season with a third straight victory as they clash with the Edmonton Oilers for the second time already this season.

The Canucks have been idle since rallying to beat the Oilers in a shootout 5-4 on Saturday. Hosting Vancouver overcame three two-goal deficits and tied the game on Linden Vey's first NHL goal at 7:06 of the third period.

Chris Higgins then scored the lone shootout tally, firing a wrister off the glove of Edmonton goaltender Viktor Fasth.

Ryan Miller stopped 25-of-29 shots and improved to 8-0-0 lifetime against the Oilers with a 1.98 goals against average and .930 save percentage.

"The boys worked real hard and bailed me out," said Miller, who rebounded to stop Jordan Eberle, David Perron and Benoit Pouliot in the shootout.

Daniel Sedin had three assists, while Henrik Sedin and Radim Vrbata came up with a goal and an assist each for a Canucks club that opened the season with a 4-2 win over Calgary on Oct. 8.

Edmonton has played twice since that shootout loss which opened a three-game road trip. The Oilers were bested 6-1 by Los Angeles on Tuesday and then lost to Arizona 7-4 the following night.

Taylor Hall scored twice and had an assist in the setback to the Coyotes. Leon Draisaitl, the third overall pick of the 2014 draft, recorded his first-career NHL point with an assist on Mark Fayne's goal, while Ben Scrivens yielded six goals on 28 shots.

"I can't throw anyone under the bus when I'm playing like that," Scrivens said. "I've got to take care of my own house first."

Edmonton has allowed 23 goals in opening the campaign with four straight losses (0-3-1).

Scrivens will likely get a chance to rebound tonight as Fasth suffered a groin injury versus the Kings that landed him on injured reserve. Scrivens is 2-1-0 with a 2.00 GAA and .944 save percentage in three previous meetings with the Canucks.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is questionable with an undisclosed injury for the start of a seven-game homestand, one that ends with another game versus Vancouver on Nov. 1.
