Luongo, Panthers blank Sabres

Oct 18, 2014 - 4:37 AM Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Sean Bergenheim scored the only goal of the game to lead the Florida Panthers in their first win of the season, a 1-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

Roberto Luongo turned away 26 shots in his first shutout of the season for the Panthers, who had opened the season with three straight losses.

Jhonas Enroth stopped 34 shots for the Sabres, who were coming off their first win of the season in Carolina on Tuesday.

"We were able to create some chances tonight, but we just couldn't get anything through," said Buffalo forward Chris Stewart. "We feel good with what we're doing, and if we work hard we'll get things together."

The only goal of the game came 3:01 into the second period, as Brad Boyes worked the puck loose along the left boards and it came out to the circle, where Bergenheim quickly wristed it in for his first of the season.

"Most of my goals come in front of the net or from quick shots," said Bergenheim. "It's always nice when it goes in and this was a nice first one to start the season."

Luongo made 12 saves through the first two periods, then stopped 14 shots in the third to preserve the shutout.

His biggest stops came during a 46-second 5-on-3 that Buffalo enjoyed in the frame, making a stop off a deflected Tyler Myers shot while screened down low.
