Lundqvist shuts the door, Rangers silence Sharks

Oct 20, 2014 - 1:34 AM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Henrik Lundqvist made 33 saves to post his first shutout of the young season, and New York ripped home three goals in just over six minutes late in the second period to aid a 4-0 decision against San Jose at Madison Square Garden.

Martin St. Louis and Rick Nash combined to tally four seconds apart late in the stanza for the Rangers, who completed a four-game homestand with two consecutive victories.

Carl Hagelin and Kevin Hayes also lit the lamp, with Dominic Moore adding a pair of assists.

"No doubt we got a couple of lucky bounces from their goaltender," said Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault.

Alex Stalock allowed all four scores on 29 shots for the Sharks, who fell to 2-1-1 on a five-game road trip which will end in Boston on Tuesday.

New York doubled its advantage with 43.6 left before intermission. St. Louis didn't give up when it appeared Stalock had the puck pinned against the right post, and his third whack forced the disc over the goal line.

Stalock then missed a poke check off the ensuing faceoff, and a forechecking Nash alertly slid it home for a 3-0 edge.

Hayes added his first career tally when he lifted a shot under the crossbar from the right circle with 7:18 elapsed in the third.

Stalock stopped Nash on a short-handed breakaway up the right wing as the clock ticked down to five minutes left in regulation. San Jose's offense couldn't puncture Lundqvist despite 13 shots in the final 20 minutes.

"We didn't work hard enough," Sharks head coach Todd McLellan said. "We didn't compete in areas we need to compete in."

After several close calls at both ends of the ice, the Rangers produced the game's first goal at 13:01 of the second period as Hagelin beat a San Jose defender to a loose puck in front and popped it over Stalock.

Lundqvist notched his 51st career whitewash ... Rangers forward Chris Mueller made his NHL debut, with 9:47 of ice time ... The St. Louis and Nash scores tied a franchise record, set by Kris King and James Patrick in the third period of a 5-3 win over the Islanders on Oct. 9, 1991.
