Perry's hat trick leads Ducks over Sabres

Oct 23, 2014 - 6:29 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Perry deposited his second hat trick of the season to back another strong showing from Frederik Andersen, and the Anaheim Ducks stayed hot with a 4-1 win over the scuffling Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.

Andersen followed up his first career shutout on Sunday against St. Louis by stopping 22-of-23 shots in Anaheim's sixth straight win.

Ryan Kesler scored a goal and Ryan Getzlaf added two assists for the Ducks, who defeated the Sabres, 5-1, in Buffalo on Oct. 13.

"It's not just me, there are a lot of things that are being done well out there," Perry said of his club. "(The Sabres) were quicker. They were ready to play. When we played them in Buffalo they didn't do a lot of good things."

Buffalo, which was coming off back-to-back losses via the shutout, had gone exactly 197 minutes without a goal until Tyler Ennis lit the lamp late in the third period.

"We came out hard and matched them physically," Ennis said. "We played hard, we played well."

Michal Neuvirth made 30 saves on 33 shots for the Sabres, who have dropped three straight overall and six of seven to open the season.

Devante Smith-Pelly worked a pass up the end boards and Getzlaf made a slick touch pass to Perry, who skated in past the defense and wristed a shot over the blocker of Neuvirth to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead 8:50 into the first.

Anaheim added another goal when Kesler notched his third of the season with under 11 minutes remaining in the second. A shot from the Sabres caromed out toward center ice, where Jakob Silfverberg sent a cross-ice pass to Andrew Cogliano, who dropped it back to Kesler for the smooth finish in the slot to make it 2-0.

Andrej Meszaros looked to cut the deficit in half moments later, but his slap shot from the right circle rang off the post as the Sabres scoreless drought continued.

"I think if Buffalo hadn't gone so long without scoring, squeezing the stick, they probably would have put a couple in early," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "(Andersen) really saved our bacon tonight."

Matt Moulson threw a shot on net late in the third and Ennis was there to put the rebound in at 14:54.

Perry scored less than three minutes later with a blast from the point, then he capped the evening with an empty-net tally to account for the final margin.

Game Notes

Perry, who now has eight goals in his first seven games this season, has tallied seven hat tricks in his career ... Andersen became the first goaltender in NHL history to win 26 of his first 31 career starts ... The Ducks lost their season opener last season before winning seven straight ... Buffalo has never been shutout in three straight games ... The Sabres went 0- for-2 on the power play and have now gone 0-for-24 with the man advantage to open the season.
