Wild get a chance at quick rebound vs. Bruins
Oct 28, 2014 - 3:02 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Less than 24 hours after a disappointing loss, the Minnesota Wild will try to get back on track when they visit the Boston Bruins in Tuesday's battle at TD Garden. The Wild visited the New York Rangers on Monday and held a 3-0 lead before falling apart in the third period en route to a 5-4 loss. The setback halted Minnesota's two-game winning streak and dropped Mike Yeo's club to 4-3-0 on the season.
Minnesota received second-period goals from Nate Prosser, Matt Cooke and Jason Pominville to carry a 3-0 cushion into the third, but the Rangers would score five times in the final 20 minutes to earn the victory. Jason Zucker scored the Wild's last goal to make it 4-2 before New York closed the contest with three unanswered tallies.
Cooke ended with a goal and an assist for the Wild, while Darcy Kuemper was tagged for all five goals on 20 shots.
"We let this one slip away," Cooke said. "We're disappointed in ourselves."
The Wild went 0-for-4 on the power play and have yet to score with the man advantage in 24 chances this season. Minnesota had two chances to score on major penalties in Monday's loss.
New York's Chris Kreider received one major for boarding Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin in the first period and Rangers defenseman John Moore was handed the other one for elbowing Erik Haula in the head. Brodin left the game briefly before returning, while Haula did not return. Haula's status for Tuesday's game is still unclear.
Minnesota played Monday without Keith Ballard and Christian Folin on Monday, as both defensemen are dealing with flu-like symptoms. They are questionable for tonight.
The Wild expect to go with Niklas Backstrom in net tonight. He is 4-0-1 with a 0.98 goals against average in five career games against Boston.
The Bruins won their first game without captain and star defenseman Zdeno Chara in the lineup, recording a 4-1 decision Saturday in Toronto. Chara will be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks with a torn PCL in his left knee suffered in Thursday's loss against the New York Islanders.
Boston has won three of its last four games after beginning the season 2-4. The B's rebounded from a 3-2 setback against the Islanders with Saturday's triumph in Toronto.
Dougie Hamilton made up for Chara's absence against the Leafs, as the young defenseman and Toronto native posted a goal and two assists in the triumph.
"This is the rink I grew up watching games in and it is the arena I dreamed of playing in the NHL, so it was an awesome feeling," Hamilton said. "I thought our whole D corps played really well; probably our best defensive game of the year. We talked about it and focused on it and we executed well."
Carl Soderberg, David Krejci and Gregory Campbell also lit the lamp for the Bruins. Tuukka Rask made 32 saves for the win.
Rask expects to start Tuesday's game and he is 2-1-1 with a 1.69 GAA in four career tilts versus Minnesota.
Boston is home for Tuesday's tilt before heading to Buffalo on Wednesday. The Bruins are 2-3-0 as the host this season.
Minnesota has won three of four and six of the last eight meetings in this series and also boasts a 6-1-0 all-time record in Boston. The Bruins won their first-ever home game against the Wild on March 17 of last season.
