Stars eye second home win vs. Hurricanes

Nov 18, 2014 - 4:12 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The struggling Dallas Stars will try to earn just their second home win of the season when they welcome the Carolina Hurricanes for Tuesday's clash at American Airlines Center.

The Stars opened the season with a respectable 4-1-2 mark, but Lindy Ruff's club has won only twice since, posting a dreadful 2-7-2 mark over the past 11 games.

Dallas seemed to have righted itself when it snapped a seven-game skid with consecutive wins last week against Arizona and Los Angeles, but the Stars were back on the schneid this past weekend, losing to Minnesota and Chicago.

The Stars fell to 1-4-4 on home ice after Saturday's 2-1 regulation setback versus the Wild, and then was routed 6-2 the next night in Chicago. Dallas was outshot 47-24 in Sunday's blowout loss, and the margin was 23-5 in the third period, when the Blackhawks scored four unanswered goals to snap a 2-2 tie.

"We can't get any lower than that," Ruff said after the embarrassing loss.

Shawn Horcoff and Curtis McKenzie scored for the Stars, while Kari Lehtonen surrendered all six goals on 47 shots.

Dallas will get a chance to turn around its play on home ice over the next week or so, as Tuesday's test kicks off a five-game stay in Big D. However, the Stars have lost six straight as the host since last picking up a home win on Oct. 21 against Vancouver.

The good news is Carolina has struggled mightily in Dallas over the years, as the franchise hasn't won a road game against the Stars since it was still based in Hartford. Since the Whalers notched a 5-3 win in Dallas on Feb. 11, 1996, the club is 0-6-4 with a tie in 11 trips to North Texas.

The Hurricanes did halt a four-game overall slide in this series when it posted a 4-1 home win on April 3 of last season.

Carolina is on a three-game slide as it plays the first of five straight road games. The 'Canes began November on a six-game point streak (5-0-1) before losing in regulation to Winnipeg, Boston and San Jose. Carolina is just 1-6-2 on the road this season

Troy Grosenick carried the Sharks to a 2-0 win at Carolina on Sunday, as the rookie stopped all 45 shots to earn a shutout victory in his NHL debut.

Anton Khudobin took the loss after making 17 saves for a Carolina team that outshot the visitors by a 45-19 margin.

"Tonight it was everything but the goals and that can be frustrating," Carolina's Eric Staal said.

Staal was one of four Carolina players with five or more shots on net in the loss, and Nathan Gerbe led the team with seven SOGs.

Carolina forward Alexander Semin and defenseman Jay Harrison have each missed the last two games due to injury and are listed by the team as day-to-day.
