Rangers blank Canadiens

Nov 24, 2014 - 5:46 AM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Henrik Lundqvist posted 21 stops for his fourth shutout of the season as the New York Rangers thumped the Montreal Canadiens, 5-0, on Sunday.

Martin St. Louis had a goal and an assist while Derek Stepan, Dominic Moore, Rick Nash and Carl Hagelin all scored for the Rangers, who have shut out their last two opponents.

"We are a fast team," Lundqvist said. "We just need to start from the right end and that's what we've been doing the last couple of weeks here."

Dustin Tokarski allowed all five goals on 34 shots for the Canadiens, who had won their previous two coming into the game.

The Rangers grabbed the lead near the midway mark of the first period as Tanner Glass wristed a shot on net from the left wing that was stopped, but the rebound sat in the slot and Moore was there to swat it home for his first of the season.

It took just 35 seconds into the second period for New York to grab a 2-0 lead when St. Louis snuck a backhand pass from the right boards to the inside left circle where Stepan beat Tokarski over the blocker with a wrist shot.

New York made it a 3-0 game at 15:33 of the second when the puck bounced into the Montreal zone. St. Louis beat Alexei Emelin to the puck and quickly lifted it into the left corner for his eighth of the season.

Goals from Hagelin at 1:40 and Nash at 15:24 in the third period put an emphasis on the rout.

"He's a great goaltender," Montreal's P.K. Subban said about Lundqvist. "We always expect him to play well, but I don't think we did a good enough job to score."

Game Notes

New York plays in Tampa Bay on Wednesday ... Montreal plays in Buffalo on Friday ... Montreal had taken a 3-1 decision at home over the Rangers on Oct. 25 ... New York was 0-for-2 on the power play and Montreal failed on its one chance ... Lundqvist has 54 shutouts in his career.
