Red Wings hold off Panthers

Jan 28, 2015 - 4:36 AM Sunrise, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Luke Glendening scored twice and the Detroit Red Wings held off the Florida Panthers for a 5-4 win on Tuesday.

Stephen Weiss posted a goal and two assists, Drew Miller scored a short-handed goal, Henrik Zetterberg also lit the lamp and Petr Mrazek made 37 saves in the Red Wings' sixth straight win.

"We really battled it out. It wasn't always pretty, but you've got to get those sometimes," Glendening said.

Aleksander Barkov finished with a goal and two assists, Nick Bjugstad supplied a goal and a helper and Brad Boyes and Brandon Pirri also scored for the Panthers, who dropped their fifth game in a row.

"There were a lot of guys that made some mistakes tonight that cost us some goals," Florida head coach Gerard Gallant said. "It was the first game back and was a sloppy game."

Al Montoya made 10 saves in relief of Roberto Luongo, who gave up five goals on 17 shots.

After Glendening increased Detroit's lead to 5-2 with a wrister in front with 8:41 left in the second, Bjugstad sent a shot over the shoulder of Mrazek from the left side of the net four minutes later.

The Panthers got within a goal with 9:06 to play after Boyes tapped in Barkov's crisp pass from the left circle.

Florida went on the power play with 2:32 remaining after Drew Miller was called for interference and pulled Montoya for a two-man advantage. Mrazek, however, fought off the Panthers' barrage for the win.

On the penalty kill early in the game, Miller took Jonathan Ericsson's bank pass off the boards in the neutral zone, skated in on a breakaway and backhanded the puck through Luongo's pads to start the scoring 8:06 into the contest.

The Panthers went ahead with two quick two power-play goals. Barkov finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play with a wrister from the right side of the net during a 5-on-3 at 9:08 and Pirri's slap shot trickled through the pads of Mrazek just 68 seconds later for a 2-1 lead.

Early in the second, Gustav Nyquist took Luongo's failed clear behind the net and sent a pass toward the slot. Justin Abdelkader tipped it to Zetterberg, who made it a 2-2 game on a wrist shot 32 seconds into the middle stanza.

Detroit took a 4-2 lead with two quick goals. Glendening took the rebound of Weiss' stuff attempt in front and lifted the puck over Luongo at 7:07 of the second and 1:19 later, Weiss tapped in Riley Sheahan's cross-crease pass.

Sheahan tallied two assists ... Zetterberg has five goals and four assists during a four-game point streak ... The Red Wings have earned points in their last 14 road games (10-0-4) against Florida dating to Feb. 17, 1997 ... The two teams will wrap up the season series on March 19 in Florida.
