Rangers beat Hurricanes in SO

Mar 22, 2015 - 3:43 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Cam Talbot made 28 saves, then two more in a shootout to lead the New York Rangers to a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night.

Mats Zuccarello beat Anton Khudobin with a forehand deke for the only goal in the shootout after J.T. Miller and Jesper Fast scored in regulation for New York.

The Rangers rebounded from a 1-0 loss to Chicago on Wednesday night, winning for the sixth time in seven games to remain two points behind Montreal for first place in the Eastern Conference.

It was their sixth consecutive win over Carolina and 16th in the last 17 meetings.

The Metropolitan Division leaders watched a 2-1 lead disappear on a Hurricanes power play with 5:33 left in regulation when Ryan Murphy beat Talbot with a slapshot from the point that made its way through heavy traffic in front.

Talbot faced 17 shots in the period, letting only that one get past.

"For two periods I don't think we gave them more than a couple of scoring chances," said Rangers coach Alain Vigneault. "In the third, they had a really strong push and they were tough to handle. Cam had some big saves to make and we were able to get it done in the shootout."

Elias Lindholm also scored for Carolina and Khudobin finished with 27 saves in the Hurricanes' third consecutive loss.

"We started playing our game in the third period," said Khudobin. "I think we started to move the puck a little bit better."

Talbot didn't face a shot in overtime. After Lindholm fired wide to open the shootout, Talbot stopped both Riley Nash and Jeff Skinner with his right pad to give New York the win.

Lindholm scored 2:01 into the game on a slapshot from the right circle, his 16th goal of the season.

The Rangers tied the score on Miller's goal 3:39 into the second after Derick Brassard won a faceoff back to Mats Zuccarello, who fed a pass to the low left side for Miller.

Fast gave New York a 2-1 lead 9:20 later, spinning in the slot after receiving a pass from Kevin Hayes and firing a shot past Khudobin.
