Red Wings shut out Lightning
Mar 28, 2015 - 11:50 PM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Petr Mrazek made 23 saves for his second shutout of the season in the Detroit Red Wings' 4-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.Detroit earned at least a point for the third time in four games with goals from Joakim Andersson, Justin Abdelkader, Gustav Nyquist and Luke Glendening.
"We know we've got to get points here going down the stretch," said Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg. "Tonight was obviously a big game for us."
Ben Bishop allowed three goals on 22 shots as the Lightning failed to clinch a playoff berth, which they could have done with a win. It was the first time they had been shut out since Dec. 14, 2013.
The Red Wings broke the scoreless deadlock 5 1/2 minutes into the second. Kyle Quincey backhanded the puck toward the net, and Andersson swatted it out of midair and through Bishop's pads.
"The last couple games, we're inventing new ways of watching pucks go in," said Lightning coach Jon Cooper. "It's a little frustrating."
Abdelkader added to his career-best season and extended his goal streak to four games just a few minutes later. After a turnover at the blue line, he skated in on Bishop and snapped a shot off the goalpost and in to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead.
Detroit continued to pour it on two minutes later. Nyquist raced to negate an icing call and backhanded a puck over Bishop's shoulder, off the crossbar and in.
With two and a half minutes left, the Lightning pulled Bishop trying to generate some pressure. Instead, Glendening knocked the puck away from Victor Hedman at the blue line and slid the puck into the empty net as he fell to the ice.
