Ducks score three unanswered to beat Jets in Game 1

Apr 17, 2015 - 6:39 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Perry scored twice in the third period and the Anaheim Ducks upended the Winnipeg Jets 4-2 in opener of their first- round Western Conference series.

Perry also recorded two assists while Ryan Getzlaf added a goal and two helpers for the top-seeded Pacific Division champs, who went 2-for-3 on the power play and saw Frederik Andersen made 25 saves.

Drew Stafford and Adam Lowry both scored for the Jets, who are still in search of their first playoff victory. The franchise reached the postseason for the first time since the Atlanta Thrashers were swept out of the first round in 2007.

Ondrej Pavelec gave up all four goals on 33 shots and will look to rebound Saturday in Game 2.

The top-seeded Ducks erased a 2-1 deficit when Perry was left unaccounted for early in the third period on a power play. A shot on net caromed to Perry's stick on the right doorstep, and he easily cashed in 69 seconds into the period.

Perry did more than be in the right place at the right time on the go-ahead goal, as he gathered the puck along the icing line and avoided a poke check while skating through the goal mouth. Pavelec made an acrobatic kick save on the initial backhand, but Perry knocked in his own rebound.

Even though Perry celebrated with his hands in the air, play resumed for several minutes before the shot was reviewed. The replay showed the puck fully crossing the goal line, and officials put the clock back to 6:39.

"I had a feeling it was in. You never know until they announce it," Perry said.

A penalty to Anaheim's Clayton Stoner was upheld even though the high-sticking occurred during the stretch that essentially never should have taken place. The Ducks killed it off, however, and Getzlaf's power-play goal into the top shelf sealed the outcome with 3:05 to play.

"It's something we have to learn from and learn from quick," Jets defenseman Tyler Myers said of the loss.

A hard-hitting opening period began with two goals in the first 2:46.

Sami Vatanen threw a shot on net from the point that deflected off a skate in front and squirted past Pavelec 1:57 into the game, and Lowry evened things with a deft deflection at an odd angle less than a minute later.

A turnover in the Anaheim zone early in the second period led to a 3-on-2 break the other way. Stafford carried the puck along the blue line, bought some time at the left circle and beat Andersen to the short side at the five- minute mark.

Another odd-man rush less than two minutes later saw Andersen smother a long rebound to keep it a 2-1 game.

Jets center Mathieu Perreault was sidelined with a lower body injury ... Winnipeg went 0-for-3 on the power play ... The Ducks recorded 18 wins in the regular season when trailing at any point in the third period ... Anaheim swept the three-game season series.
