Sharks sign D Paul Martin to open free agency
Jul 1, 2015 - 6:37 PM SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) The San Jose Sharks have signed free agent defenseman Paul Martin to a four-year contract. The team finalized the deal for a reported $19.4 million shortly after the start of Wednesday's free agency period.
Shoring up a spotty defense had been the priority for general manager Doug Wilson after he found his starting goaltender the day before free agency in a deal with Boston for Martin Jones.
San Jose missed the postseason last season for the first time since 2003 after allowing their most goals per game in nine years.
The 34-year-old Martin had spent the past five seasons in Pittsburgh. He is strong in the defensive zone and is a good puck mover. He had three goals and 17 assists in 74 games last season.
