Kyle Busch involved in big crash at Talladega

Oct 19, 2014 - 8:35 PM Talladega, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Busch's hopes of advancing into the next round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship took a big hit when he was involved in a multi-car crash during Sunday's Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

The accident occurred on the backstretch on lap 103, right after a round of green flag pit stops had begun, and it involved Busch, A.J. Allmendinger, Aric Almirola, Alex Bowman, Austin Dillon, Terry Labonte, Tony Stewart and J.J. Yeley.

While running in a tight pack of cars, Almirola got into the back of Yeley and put him hard into the outside wall, triggering the incident. Busch sustained heavy damage to his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota when it appeared that Dillon collided into him. Busch was running in the back of the field in 37th at the time of the wreck.

"We were just all starting to shuffle around there and getting ready to pit, and I think it was the 83 (Yeley) in front of me, and I think he might have been trying to check up to get to the bottom," Almirola said. "I just barely started to push him, and it hooked his car, and we all wrecked."

Busch along with Yeley, Almirola and Bowman had to take their cars to the garage for repairs. Busch was listed in last place in the 43-car field when the race resumed on lap 109.

It was the second caution in this 188-lap, 500-mile race. The first caution happened on lap 60 for a crash on the frontstretch involving Chase driver Joey Logano, who won two weeks ago at Kansas, and Jamie McMurray. Both drivers continued on in the event.

Busch came to Talladega second in the Chase standings, just six points behind leader Logano. After this race, the Chase field will be trimmed from 12 drivers to eight for the Eliminator Round, which begins next Sunday at Martinsville.
