SKC doubles up on Crew
May 4, 2014 - 10:26 PM Kansas City, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - A goal in the 10th minute from Jacob Peterson and another in the final moments from Claudio Bieler helped Sporting Kansas City to a 1-0 home victory against the Columbus Crew on Sunday.Peterson's goal held up over the final 80 minutes with Bieler coming off the bench to score just before the final whistle, while the Crew played the last 10 minutes with 10 men after Wil Trapp picked up a second yellow card.
The result extends the Crew's winless streak to five games, while Sporting has won two of its last three contests.
A deflected shot from Graham Zusi inside the penalty area led to the opening goal as the ball bounced around the box and ended up at the feet of Peterson, who drove home a first-time shot from eight yards.
Sporting goalkeeper Eric Kronberg had to be alert to keep out a point-blank header from the Crew's Bernardo Anor in the 31st minute, but the hosts had the better of the play in the second half.
Dominic Dwyer squandered a good chance in the 49th when he failed to turn home a pass from Zusi seven yards from goal, while Benny Feilhaber sent a shot whistling past the top corner of the net after he gained possession in the final third.
Trapp was sent off after he received a second yellow card for a foul on Feilhaber in the 80th minute, and Bieler put the finishing touches on the win with a tap in after being set up by Zusi.
