DCU tops struggling TFC to continue winning streak
Jul 31, 2014 - 1:06 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - D.C. United won its fourth straight match on Wednesday with a comfortable 3-0 triumph over Toronto FC at RFK Stadium.Eddie Johnson got United off the mark after eight minutes, while Chris Rolfe doubled the advantage just before the hour mark and a Nick Hagglund own goal capped the scoring in the 67th.
The win moves the hosts to within one point of Eastern Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City, while TFC's struggles continue with the club having claimed just one win in its last eight games.
Toronto almost took the lead in the seventh minute when Michael Bradley played a through ball on the right to Dominic Oduro, only for his first-time shot to roll just past the far post.
The home side responded immediately and took the lead one minute later as Perry Kitchen got down the right wing and delivered a cross to the front of goal for Johnson to easily head home.
Rolfe just missed with a header at close range in the 31st, while United goalkeeper Bill Hamid kept his men in front at the break when he denied a point-blank shot from Oduro.
United doubled its lead in the 59th through some good work from Nick DeLeon as he worked his way into the penalty area and was brought down. The referee waived play on and Rolfe took advantage by slotting his shot past goalkeeper Joe Bendik.
The win was then wrapped up eight minutes later when DeLeon once again was at the center of things as he beat Hagglund and had his shot saved by Bendik. However, the ball rebounded off Hagglund and went into the net for an own goal, capping a dismal evening for the Canadian side.
