Keane's double lifts Galaxy past Timbers

Aug 2, 2014 - 8:56 PM Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Robbie Keane netted a second-half double to lift the Los Angeles Galaxy to a comfortable 3-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Saturday at the StubHub Center.

Keane struck in the 73rd and 85th minutes to go with a goal from Gyasi Zardes in first-half stoppage time for the Galaxy, who continued their fine run of form with a fourth win in five matches.

Diego Valeri netted the lone tally for Portland, which has yet to win against the Galaxy away from home and remain in seventh place in the crowded Western Conference with 27 points.

The Galaxy had a quality chance just five minutes into the game through Landon Donovan, but it was the Timbers that struck first in the 14th minute as Valeri whipped a superbly-taken free kick on goal from about 25 yards out that took a slight deflection off the wall and beat Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo to the near post.

Los Angeles pulled back the equalizer in the third minute of first-half stoppage time when Robbie Rogers got forward down the left flank and served a perfect ball right to the head of Zardes, who easily nodded it home.

The hosts then seized full control of proceedings in the second half as Keane put the Galaxy in front in the 73rd minute as he drifted to the far post unmarked and nodded home a cross from Donovan.

With five minutes to play, Juninho was hauled down in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick and Keane deposited it into the bottom right corner of the net with ease to secure all three points for the home side.
