RSL piles more misery on DCU
Aug 10, 2014 - 4:02 AM Sandy, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Real Salt Lake piled more misery on D.C. United on Saturday by handing the Eastern Conference side a 3-0 loss at Rio Tinto Stadium.D.C. entered the game on the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat to the Houston Dynamo last time out, and things went from bad to worse as the club fell three goals behind inside the opening 24 minutes of Saturday's clash with Salt Lake.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Luke Mulholland picked out an unmarked Joao Plata, who directed his header past a helpless Bill Hamid.
Chris Schuler doubled Salt Lake's lead two minutes later when Javier Morales squared a pass to the near post for the defender to tuck home with a first- time finish.
The duo connected again in the 24th minute when Morales' corner kick was slammed home by Schuler with a powerful header.
It proved to be all Salt Lake would need to collect the win as the club improves to 39 points on the season to temporarily move into first place, though Seattle Sounders FC can reclaim top spot with a victory over Houston on Sunday.
D.C. remains in second place in the East on 37 points.
