Nguyen's brace leads the way as Revs down SKC
Sep 4, 2014 - 1:40 AM Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New England Revolution claimed a third successive win on Wednesday as Lee Nguyen scored a pair of goals in the second half to lift the club to a 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City at Gillette Stadium.Sporting jumped out to a ninth-minute lead through Soony Saad, but Teal Bunbury equalized for the hosts on the stroke of halftime.
Nguyen then separated the teams early in the second half with a nice strike from the edge of the penalty area before he added another goal deep into stoppage time, handing Sporting its third defeat on the bounce.
The Revs failed to deal with a long throw in from Matt Besler that resulted in the opening goal after nine minutes as Nguyen was unable to head the ball clear, instead flicking it on to the far post where Saad was waiting to stab it home.
It was a poor start for the hosts but they managed to rebound just before the break with a bit of good fortune.
Bunbury beat a defender on the right wing and carried the ball into the area before driving a shot toward goal that took a wicked deflection off of Besler on its way inside the right post.
Kelyn Rowe set up the go-ahead goal in the 48th when he dribbled down the left flank and squared the ball to Nguyen at the edge of the area, allowing the midfielder to take a touch and drive the ball high into the net past goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum.
Substitute Patrick Mullins forced a nice diving stop from Gruenebaum late in the game that kept Sporting within a goal, but Nguyen scored on the break just before the final whistle to close out the game and hand his side three points.
