Martins, Rose help Sounders smash Chivas
Sep 4, 2014 - 4:31 AM Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Two goals apiece from Obafemi Martins and Andy Rose helped Seattle Sounders FC roll to a 4-2 win over Chivas USA on Wednesday at the StubHub Center, moving Seattle five points clear at the top of the Western Conference. The Sounders did all their work in the first 42 minutes as the club raced out to a 4-0 lead before halftime with Martins scoring in the 11th and 16th minutes while Rose netted his first two goals of the campaign four minutes apart to help Seattle capture a third successive win.
Chivas managed to snap a 597-minute scoring drought when Marco Delgado found the net in the 51st minute for the Goats, who used a Ryan Finley penalty kick on the hour mark to reduce the deficit to 4-2. However, it was too little too late for the team, which saw its winless streak eight games.
Brad Evans had a hand in three of the goals for Seattle, and it was his corner kick in the 11th minute that was flicked on by Chad Marshall, allowing Martins to score from close range.
Clint Dempsey nearly made it 2-0 a few minutes later as he chipped a shot over the head of goalkeeper Dan Kennedy that was cleared off the goal line by Chivas defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado.
But Martins doubled the lead shortly after when he tapped in a pass from Lamar Neagle, who rounded Kennedy after being played in on goal by Dempsey.
Rose had yet to score for Seattle this season but he chances that in the 38th when he got under a free kick from Evans to send a fine left-footed volley past Kennedy.
And just four minutes later Rose scored again, this time with his head from another Evans free kick to cap a miserable first half for Chivas.
Delgado managed to end the barren spell for Chivas in front of goal when he nodded a cross from Eric Avila inside the far post before Finley drew a penalty kick on the hour after going down under a challenge from Zach Scott.
Finley picked himself up and converted the spot kick, but Seattle saw off the final 30 minutes with little trouble to maintain its place atop the conference.
