Rose's late strike sees Seattle edge 10-man RSL

Sep 13, 2014 - 4:55 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Andy Rose scored at the death to help Seattle Sounders FC secure a 3-2 victory over 10-man Real Salt Lake at Century Link Field on Friday.

The two sides were level heading into the final stages of the contest when the home side, buoyed by a second-half red card to Nat Borchers, claimed a stoppage-time winner thanks to Rose's third goal of the campaign.

The win sees Seattle (17-7-3) extend its lead atop the MLS table as it improves to 54 points, bringing the club eight points clear of Real Salt Lake (12-6-10).

The visitors went in front at the half-hour mark of Friday's contest when Javier Morales collected a pass from Luke Mulholland and fired a right-footed shot past Stefan Frei at the far post.

But Seattle managed to overturn the deficit before the close of the opening period as goals from Lamar Neagle and Obafemi Martins put the hosts in front.

Neagle leveled the score in the 38th minute when he took a poke from DeAndre Yedlin and curled a superb shot from distance past Nick Rimando.

Martins then provided the go-ahead goal three minutes before the break, taking a pass from Clint Dempsey and slipping a shot past Rimando and into the back of the net.

Salt Lake, however, equalized five minutes into the second half when Joao Plata's shot from the corner of the penalty area took a wicked deflection on its way past Frei.

The Claret and Cobalt were dealt a major blow in the 68th minute when Borchers was issued a straight red card for tugging Martins to the ground from behind when the Nigerian striker was through on goal.

It took some time, but Seattle finally managed to take advantage of the extra man as Rose popped up with the winner in stoppage time, taking a lay off from Yedlin and smashing a shot past Rimando.
