Red Bulls, Revs square off at Gillette

May 1, 2015 - 8:51 PM Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of Eastern Conference rivals will clash on Saturday when the New England Revolution host the New York Red Bulls at Gillette Stadium.

After a relatively slow start to the season, the Revs got on the winning track in a big way last time out, cruising to a 4-0 thrashing of Real Salt Lake on home soil, sparked by a pair of goals from Juan Agudelo.

Midfielder Chris Tierney opened the scoring for New England when he did well to cut inside on the left side of the pitch to beat his mark before uncorking and well-struck bending effort that snuck inside the far post past RSL goalkeeper Jeff Attinella.

The Revs doubled the lead two minutes prior to the break when Charlie Davies got in behind the RSL defense and let a strike go that was stopped by Attinella, but he left the rebound in front of the net and Agudelo was in perfect position to knock it home.

The Revs made it 3-0 five minutes into the second half when Charlie Davies got on the end of a cross from Scott Caldwell and nodded it home, and Caldwell got into the scoring mood with six minutes to play when he fired home his first career goal in Major League Soccer.

"It was a good start for us and I thought they started well," said Revs head coach Jay Heaps. "They came into the game in a good form, good shape and it took us a little while to get control of the game, but once we did I thought we were moving really well and created a lot of chances."

New York, meanwhile, will be looking to remain unbeaten on the season after settling for a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids on home soil at Red Bull Arena.

The hosts fell behind in the 25th minute when Gabriel Torres cleared the defense on a free kick and redirected the Dillon Powers cross in to the back of the net.

The Red Bulls, however, equalized within five minutes. The Rapids Ben Newnam fouled Sacha Kljestan in the penalty area and referee Mark Geiger issued a penalty kick. Bradley Wright-Phillips made no mistake and deposited the ball in the lower left corner to tie the match 1-1.

"What was troubling about tonight, I'm not so worried about the first goal part as much as I am just having a really bad start to the game where we wanted to make sure we had a good start and were on top of the match from the beginning," said Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch.

"I think that we thought this was going to be an easier game than it was. Credit to Colorado, I think we knew that they were going to come here, fight and battle hard and they did. They definitely earned that draw and so that was the part that was frustrating a little bit is that we just didn't come out and command the game like we need to."
