Allen leaves it late as RSL clips TFC
Mar 30, 2015 - 1:13 AM Sandy, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Allen's first goal in Major League Soccer proved to be the difference on Sunday as Real Salt Lake held on to claim a nervy 2-1 victory over Toronto FC at Rio Tinto Stadium. After earning two draws from its first two matches, Real Salt Lake went in search of its first three-point effort on Sunday, but were on the back foot early as Toronto FC controlled play for large stretches of the opening half.
Despite not seeing much of the ball, RSL found the game's first goal in the 38th minute when Javier Morales served an excellent ball over the top to Luke Mulholland, who took a quick touch and fired it past TFC goalkeeper Joe Bendik.
Missing two of their biggest stars in Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore due to international duty, TFC leaned on the star-power of Sebastian Giovinco to try and lead them to a result.
The visitors upped the pressure significantly in the second half and the best chance to find an equalizer came in the 77th minute when Giovinco uncorked a wicked free kick from 25 yards out, but RSL goalkeeper Jeff Attinella came up with a superb diving save.
Sensing there would be more opportunities to level things, TFC manager Greg Vanney sent Jackson and Bright Dike, both forwards, onto the pitch hoping to find a late offensive spark.
Vanney's move paid almost immediate dividends as TFC pulled level two minutes from time when Dike did well to collect the ball on the right side of the pitch and flick it into the path of Jackson, who ushered it into the net.
But the winner came just seconds later as Morales lofted a cross into the box where Allen was free to nod it past Bendik and hand RSL all three points in dramatic fashion.
