Rapids roll over FCD to snap winless skid

Apr 11, 2015 - 12:59 AM Frisco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rapids brought an end to their 18-game winless streak in a big way on Friday as the club claimed a 4-0 win over FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium thanks in large part in the play of Dillon Powers, who scored a goal and assisted on another.

The Rapids winless skid dates back to last season after the club ended the 2014 campaign poorly and then began this term with three successive 0-0 draws before a 2-0 defeat last weekend.

However, Dominique Badji needed less than two minutes to score Colorado's first goal of the season, and Powers doubled the lead in the 43rd.

Gabriel Torres followed with a goal 20 minutes from time and Dillon Serna came off the bench and capped the win with a wonderful strike, allowing the team to breathe a big sigh of relief while handing Dallas a second successive defeat.

The first real attack of the game netted a surprise goal for the visitors as Powers curled an accurate ball to the front of goal from the right wing that allowed Badji to stab home his team's first goal from close range.

Badji was a handful for the Dallas defense in the opening half and he went close with another effort from the top of the box that rolled just wide of the right post.

But only a few minutes later Marcelo Sarvas released Powers down the left wing with a quickly-taken free kick, and the young midfielder got into the penalty area and lashed a shot inside the far post just beyond the reach of goalkeeper Chris Seitz.

The hosts tried to get back into the game in the second half and Tesho Akindele had a powerful close-range effort parried nicely by Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin.

Powers then capped his outstanding performance by helping in the third goal as well as his deflected pass fell kindly into the path of Juan Ramirez, who laid the ball off for Torres to finish with a first-time effort from 12 yards.

Serna replaced Powers in the 81st minute and made an impression of his own with a fantastic strike from 30 yards that sailed just under the crossbar to put the finishing touches on the win.
