Martins' double helps Sounders thump NYCFC
May 4, 2015 - 1:09 AM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Obafemi Martins netted a pair of goals and added an assist on Sunday as Seattle Sounders FC rolled to a 3-1 victory over New York City FC at Yankee Stadium.Martins scored his 30th career goal in a Sounders kit in the first half and added a second in the 66th minute, while U.S. national team captain Clint Dempsey struck in the 58th minute. Marco Pappa chipped in with a pair of assists for the Sounders, who earned their third consecutive victory.
New York City, meanwhile, is stuck in some expansion franchise struggles as Mehdi Ballouchy's second-half tally wasn't enough to keep Jason Kreis' side from extending its winless streak to seven matches.
New York had the better of the play early on and created the first quality chance of the night just six minutes in when Khiry Shelton had a go from the top of the box but dragged his attempt wide of the left post.
The visitors struck first in the 23rd minute when Pappa played an inch-perfect through ball in behind the NYC defense to Martins, who calmly fired it past NYCFC goalkeeper Josh Saunders for his milestone tally.
NYC pulled itself level in the 54th minute when Patrick Mullins sent a quick pass across the top of the box to Ballouchy, who fired it into the roof of the net, sending the home fans into euphoria.
Ballouchy went straight off the field after scoring the goal as star forward David Villa was brought on by Kreis, looking to provide another offensive spark.
But all the positive vibes went out of the building just four minutes later when Dempsey took a pass from Pappa, cut to his right and slid it past Saunders low to the far post.
Martins collected his second goal of the night in the 66th minute to widen the lead further. New York City responded with plenty of pressure and scoring opportunities in the attacking third in the final 10 minutes, but Seattle held on to claim all three points.
