Sporting holds off Galaxy to stay on top of East

Jul 20, 2014 - 12:19 AM Kansas City, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Sporting Kansas City continued their winning ways on Saturday as goals from Benny Feilhaber and Lawrence Olum lifted the club to a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy at Sporting Park.

Feilhaber scored on a well-taken free kick 10 minutes into the contest, while Olum netted Sporting's second goal just after the hour mark.

Robbie Keane pulled a goal back for the Galaxy 11 minutes from time, but it wasn't enough to extend the club's unbeaten run to nine games.

The win is Sporting's fifth in the last six games and it extends the team's lead over second-place D.C. United in the Eastern Conference to four points.

Sporting won a free kick in a dangerous area just 10 minutes into the match and Feilhaber made the most of the chance by curling the ball over the wall and inside the left post.

Soony Saad had a chance to double the lead for the hosts in the 32nd minute but his powerful shot was tipped around the post by Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo.

Los Angeles came within inches of equalizing in the 47th when a shot from Baggio Husidic struck the post before Keane fired a shot just over the net after being played in on goal.

Despite the pressure the Galaxy went down 2-0 in the 61st when a header from Jacob Peterson was tipped onto the crossbar by Penedo, allowing Olum to head home the rebound.

Keane struck the crossbar for the Galaxy in the 65th, but he finally scored in the 79th by poking the ball past goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum from inside the area.

Sporting was able to see off the rest of the game, however, and the club will face Eastern Conference contender Toronto FC next weekend.
