'Quakes hold off Galaxy at StubHub Center

Aug 9, 2014 - 4:54 AM Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Galaxy were made to settle for a point at the StubHub Center on Friday as the club was held to a 1-1 draw by the San Jose Earthquakes.

The Galaxy controlled large stretches of the match but also surrendered the lead on two separate occasions, leaving the hosts with an uphill battle for much of the contest.

San Jose, which only managed three shots in the game, took the lead in the 18th minute against the run of play.

The visitors countered following Marcelo Sarvas' blocked shot as Shea Salinas released Chris Wondolowski on the left side of the penalty area. The United States international made no mistake with the finish, cutting the ball onto his right foot and slamming a shot past Jaime Penedo from a tough angle.

The Galaxy managed to pull level in the 29th minute when Robbie Keane's blocked shot forced Jon Busch out of position, allowing Gyasi Zardes to fire home the rebound at the near post.

But San Jose restored its lead just two minutes later through a well-worked move that saw Wondolowski flick Atiba Harris' pass into the path of Matias Perez Garcia, who marked his MLS debut with a first-time shot from distance that made its way past Penedo.

Los Angeles emerged from the halftime interval and wasted little time in getting back on level terms as Omar Gonzalez nodded home Stefan Ishizaki's corner kick in the 49th minute.

The Galaxy continued to apply pressure to the San Jose net, but the 'Quakes staved off the onslaught to collect a valuable road point.

The result brings San Jose (6-8-6) to 24 points on the season while keeping Los Angeles (9-4-7) in third place in the Western Conference on 34 points.
