Meram, Finlay lead Columbus past L.A.

Aug 17, 2014 - 1:38 AM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Meram and Ethan Finlay both recorded a goal and an assist at Crew Stadium on Saturday as the Columbus Crew eased past the Los Angeles Galaxy in a 4-1 win.

Columbus broke the deadlock after 23 minutes when Meram collected a pass from Tony Tchani, spun around to wriggle free of the Galaxy defense and curled a superb effort over Jaime Penedo and into the upper corner.

Meram turned provider 10 minutes later by slipping a through ball into the path of Finlay, who fired a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net to double the Crew's advantage.

Los Angeles regrouped at halftime and wasted little time in getting back into the match as Gyasi Zardes got on the end of Dan Gargan's cross in the 49th minute and lashed a first-time volley past Steve Clark.

The Galaxy pushed in search of an equalizer, but the Crew effectively sealed all three points in the 75th minute when Ben Speas collected a pass from Finlay and slid a left-footed shot back across goal and past a diving Penedo.

Giancarlo Gonzalez made sure of the victory six minutes from time when the Costa Rica international rose high to meet Federico Higuain's delivery and nod home his first MLS goal.

The result sees Columbus (7-8-9) improve to 30 points on the season with its third league win in its last five outings.

Los Angeles (9-5-7) suffers just its fifth league loss of the season, keeping the club on 34 points.
