Zardes' double helps Galaxy rout Chivas USA

Sep 1, 2014 - 2:15 AM Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Gyasi Zardes scored on either side of the intermission on Sunday as the Los Angeles Galaxy rolled past Chivas USA, 3-0, in the latest edition of the SuperClasico at the StubHub Center.

Zardes opened the scoring in the 41st minute and Robbie Keane netted a second goal in the 68th minute before Zardes finished his double three minutes later to help the Galaxy to a fourth straight win in league play. Bruce Arena's side climbs to within two points of West-leading Seattle with 46 points.

Chivas USA created little in the way of quality scoring opportunities and saw their winless streak reach seven straight matches as the Goats remain rooted to the bottom of the Western Conference with 24 points.

The hosts opened the scoring four minutes before the break as Zardes latched onto a pass from Landon Donovan and ripped it past Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

It was 2-0 for the Galaxy in the 68th minute through a nice bit of individual skill from Keane, who beat two Chivas defenders and chipped it over the head of an out-of-position Kennedy from the top of the penalty area.

The hosts then wrapped up the points in the 71st minute as Keane and Donovan worked a brilliant one-two on the edge of the area to beat a pair of defenders and send Donovan through. Donovan looked up and slid the ball to a wide-open Zardes, who finished into the empty net for his 13th goal of the season.

The Goats had little answer for the high-flying Galaxy attack, leading scorer Erick Torres was shown a straight red card 15 minutes from time, and Chivas fell to its 13th defeat of the season.
