Impact hope to slow streaking Galaxy

Sep 9, 2014 - 9:11 PM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Galaxy will attempt to take over the top spot in the Western Conference on Wednesday at Saputo Stadium with a win over last-place Montreal Impact.

The Galaxy is in the midst of a great run of form having won five straight games to close to within two points of West leaders Seattle.

Montreal, meanwhile, has lost nine of its last 11 games and owns only five victories in 26 league games this term.

Los Angeles enters this match after a resounding 6-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Friday in a game that saw Rapids goalkeeper Joe Nasco receive the quickest red card in MLS history, earning himself an early exit just 34 seconds into the contest.

From there the Galaxy rolled to the big win behind two goals apiece from Landon Donovan, Baggio Husidic and Gyasi Zardes on a night when the club's thoughts were clearly with defender A.J. DeLaGarza, whose infant son Luca passed away after battling a heart condition last week.

The Galaxy honored the memory of Luca with a moment of silence prior to the win over the Rapids, and defender Omar Gonzalez acknowledged that Friday night's game was about more than just three points.

"Tonight was about something bigger than all of us," said Gonzalez. "[We were] playing for his family and it's just great that there is so much love here. We're happy that we could get this win for them tonight."

The Impact is coming off yet another away defeat, this one a 3-2 setback in Houston.

Montreal is now 0-10-3 away from home this season, but while the result didn't please head coach Frank Klopas, the boss reserved much of his anger for the officiating.

With the Impact trailing 3-2 in the 88th minute to the Dynamo, Houston's A.J. Cochran appeared to clearly handle the ball inside his own penalty area, but referee Fotis Bazakos waved play on and Houston was able to hold out for the final few minutes to claim the win.

A lack of penalty decisions in Montreal's favor is something that has bothered Klopas all season, with the Impact having been awarded just one spot kick this year.

"Another day, we scored two goals again, we should have walked away with a result, but let me just say: clear handball in the end," Klopas said following the loss to the Dynamo. "I'm disappointed with the refs that we, us, the Montreal Impact, we never get any calls. It's a joke."

The Impact are rooted to the foot of the Eastern Conference table and have endured a frustrating campaign. However, the club has at least put together a respectable record on home soil, going 5-6-2 at Saputo Stadium.
