'Caps edge Rapids to clinch playoff berth

Oct 26, 2014 - 4:31 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC made hard work of the playoff push but ultimately secured a spot in the postseason with a 1-0 defeat of the Colorado Rapids at BC Place on Saturday.

The Portland Timbers earned a 2-0 victory over FC Dallas earlier on Saturday, meaning that the 'Caps would only sneak into the postseason with a win against Colorado.

Vancouver was made to wait until the 69th minute for a winner as Kendall Waston nodded home a corner kick to ensure the victory in dramatic fashion.

The 'Caps struggled to create much in the way of scoring opportunities as Colorado made it to halftime with a clean sheet in tact.

Vancouver came close to breaking the deadlock in the 57th minute when Kekuta Manneh curled a superb effort toward goal only to see his shot come back off the crossbar.

The miss typified Vancouver's night to that point in the match, but the hosts managed to get in front just 12 minutes later when Pedro Morales whipped a corner kick to the near post where Waston was arriving to send a powerful header through traffic and into the back of the net.

Vancouver worked tirelessly to maintain the lead and ultimately secured the win, climbing to 50 points on the season to secure fifth place in the Western Conference.

The 'Caps will travel to Toyota Stadium to face FC Dallas in the Western Conference play-in match.

Colorado, meanwhile, sees its regular season conclude with four successive defeats, leaving the club on 32 points.
