NYCFC hopes to keep rolling at Colorado

Mar 20, 2015 - 8:34 PM Commerce City, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - New York City FC will attempt to keep rolling on Saturday when the expansion club travels to Dick's Sporting Goods Park to face the Colorado Rapids.

New York marked its MLS debut with a fine performance in a 1-1 draw Orlando City SC before producing a dominant display in its home opener, dictating play in a 2-0 defeat of the New England Revolution at Yankee Stadium last Sunday.

David Villa ran the show, roving around the pitch and making himself a nuisance to the New England defense. It paid dividends as the Spanish striker opened the scoring in the 19th minute following a nifty give-and-go, then turned provider late in the contest by setting up Patrick Mullins for the insurance goal.

It was the type of outing that is sure to put other MLS clubs on alert, which is precisely how Colorado plans to contain Villa.

"Obviously he's a great player, with a goal and an assist at the weekend, so he's kind of the guy that makes them tick a little bit up front and in their attacking play, so (if we) limit his time and space on the ball, then everything should be good from there," Rapids midfielder Sam Cronin told the club's official website.

Colorado may be very well suited to deny New York's wealth of attacking options. The Rapids earned a point from a scoreless draw on the road against the Philadelphia Union in their first outing of the season, thanks in large part to the pairing of Bobby Burling and Axel Sjoberg in the center of the club's defense.

They will have their hands full against a New York side littered with technical and creative players, as well as difference-makers coming off the bench.

Mullins, a second-half substitute against New England, exhibited a great deal of excitement in scoring for the expansion club, immediately kissing the NYCFC badge upon slotting Villa's pass into the back of the net, even despite scoring against his former club.

"The Revolution were a great organization to me, but tonight was about one thing and that was NYCFC," Mullins said Sunday evening. "I think I showed after that goal I couldn't be happier to be here and proud to represent the organization."
