Minella wins Baku Cup opener
Jul 23, 2012 - 4:15 PM Baku, Azerbaijan (Sports Network) - Mandy Minella of Luxembourg was a first- round winner Monday on the opening day of play at the Baku Cup.The third-seeded Minella notched a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Chinese qualifier Qiang Wang on the hardcourts at the Baku Tennis Academy.
Meanwhile, Serbian qualifier Aleksandra Krunic, ranked 213th in the world, battled past fourth-seeded Czech Andrea Hlavackova 6-1, 6-7 (11-13), 6-4.
Other first-round winners included Russians Alla Kudryavtseva and qualifier Valeria Solovieva and Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand.
Kazakhstan's Ksenia Pervak returns as the top seed after losing to Russian Vera Zvonareva in last year's final.
