Golden boy Murray pulls out of Toronto

Aug 10, 2012 - 12:53 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray pulled out of the $2.649 million Rogers Cup tennis event, citing a left knee injury.

The British star suffered the injury while chasing down a forehand shot in his Wednesday victory on the hardcourts at Toronto's Rexall Centre.

The second-seeded Murray was scheduled to battle 16th-seeded rising Canadian favorite Milos Raonic on Thursday, but Raonic, instead, moved into the quarterfinals via walkover.

Murray, who's a two-time Rogers Cup champion, upset Roger Federer in this past Sunday's marquee men's singles gold-medal match at the All England Club, where the British star lost to the Swiss great in the Wimbledon finale last month.

Rain wiped out all singles play on Thursday, causing a logjam for Friday's schedule. Players will compete in third-round matches and then turn around for quarterfinal encounters later in the day and at night.

Top seed Novak Djokovic, the reigning Australian Open and U.S. Open champion, will battle American Sam Querrey in round three. The two-time Rogers Cup titlist Djokovic beat American Mardy Fish in last year's Rogers Cup finale in Montreal.

This sixth of nine ATP Masters events will pay its newest champion $522,550.
