Wickmayer moves on in Dallas
Aug 20, 2012 - 3:39 AM Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Fourth-seeded Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium was a first-round winner Sunday at the $220,000 Texas Open, a final U.S. Open tune- up.Wickmayer beat Heather Watson of Great Britain by a 6-3, 6-4 margin on the hardcourts at Hilton Lakes Tennis & Sports Club.
Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada upset fifth-seeded Czech Klara Zakopalova 6-0, 7-6 (7-2).
Chanelle Scheepers, the No. 7 seed, of South Africa defeated Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-0, 6-2, while eighth-seeded Sorana Cirstea of Romania posted a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victory over Jarmila Gajdosova.
In other first-round action, Alize Cornet of France outlasted Czech Iveta Benesova 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands beat Romina Oprandi of Switzerland 7-5, 6-4, Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia took down Russian Alexandra Panova 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and Polona Hercog of Slovenia defeated Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 6-4, retired.
German Sabine Lisicki beat France's Aravane Rezai in last year's inaugural Dallas finale.
The 2012 Texas Open champ will earn $37,000.
