Players You Love to Hate:
Since the epicenter of my anger seems to shift on a regular basis, I figure I should update this every week. This weeks player:
Rich Harden - SP - Oakland Athletics
A lot of managers seem to be high on Harden and are of the belief that this is the year he finally puts it all together, but I tend to disagree. Harden started strong each of the past two seasons yet failed to make it out of April unscathed.
2006 - He started his first five games of the year before leaving in the fourth inning of his fifth start (April 26th) due to back spasms, not to be heard from again until June 22.
2007 - He started his first three games of the year before leaving in the seventh inning of his third start (April 15th) due to tightness in his pitching shoulder, not to be heard from again until June 22.
"You don't know what you talking about Voice Activated Retard. He pitched a solid game the other night, and he looks great. Stud all the way."
Yes, he did pitch a good game against the Red Sox. Let's take a look at his numbers shall we...
6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K
Those are some pretty good numbers. Not bad for his first start, but then again his numbers from his first game last year, the year where his broke down mid April, looked pretty good as well.
7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
He was getting the same hype then as he is now. We're talking about a pitcher who has only pitched one full season in his five years in the big leagues. A pitcher who has a track record of breaking down early in the season. A pitcher who has started just 14 games in the past 2.48 years (908 days), and pitcher who a lot of uninformed managers are willing to overpay for right now based on one good game.
I am of the opinion that we are in the process of seeing history repeat itself and there won't be any better time to trade Harden then today. Sell 'em if you got 'em.
