Tigers continue AFL coaching overhaul
Sep 26, 2016 - 8:21 AM Richmond have added the first piece of Damien Hardwick's recast coaching panel, signing highly-regarded assistant coach Blake Caracella from Geelong. The Tigers are undertaking an extensive overhaul of their off-field operations after a dismal season, with Neil Balme switching from Collingwood to head up their new-look football department.
Balme's appointment had been the centrepiece of rebel group Focus on Footy's ultimately unsuccessful challenge of club president Peggy O'Neal's board.
Caracella will be one of several new arrivals at Punt Road after Hardwick's right-hand man Brendon Lade signed a long-term deal with Port Adelaide.
Assistant coaches Greg Mellor, Ross Smith and premiership coach Mark Williams were not offered new contracts after the Tigers slumped to 13th with just eight wins this season.
Caracella spent seven years with the Cats, including the club's last premiership season in 2011.
He worked under Balme there and also played alongside Hardwick in Essendon's 2000 AFL premiership side.
"Blake has impressive credentials, experiencing great success throughout his playing and coaching career, and we're really excited that he's joining our coaching ranks," Balme said.
"I know what a quality person Blake is, and can't speak highly enough of him, having spent a number of years working with him as both a player and a coach.
"We're looking forward to him hitting the ground running along with Damien, the other coaches, and the players at the start of the 2017 preseason."
