Former skipper goes as Demons wield axe
Sep 27, 2016 - 8:43 AM Former Melbourne skipper Jack Grimes is looking for a new AFL club after he was one of three players cut by the Demons on Tuesday.Grimes, Matt Jones and Dean Terlich have all been told they will not be offered new contracts for the 2017 season.
Grimes, 27, played 100 games for Melbourne and was a co-captain from 2012 to 2014, but managed just two senior appearances this season.
"Jack Grimes is a man of great integrity and this was a tough decision for everyone involved," Demons football chief Josh Mahoney said via a statement.
"He had captained the club and is universally respected for his professional approach to football. This was on full display this year in his time with the Casey Scorpions, where he drove standards at VFL level and helped the team reach a grand final.
"Jack played 100 games for the club and will become a life member and we wish him well for the next phase of his AFL journey."
Grimes was the 14th overall pick at the 2007 AFL draft and shared captaincy duties with Jack Trengove in 2012 and 2013, then with current skipper Nathan Jones in 2014, before stepping down from the role.
Terlich played 35 games for the Demons after debuting in round two of the 2013 season, but hasn't played at AFL level in the past two seasons.
Jones played 61 games, with 10 of those this season.
"Matt and Dean arrived at the club together as mature-aged recruits and made an immediate impact, both finishing in the top five of the 2013 best and fairest award," Mahoney said.
"They will leave the club knowing they made a significant contribution during their time here."
